Entertainment Technology — Design, Manufacture and Use of Aluminum Trusses and Towers

ANSI E1.2 describes the design, manufacture, and use of aluminum trusses, towers, and associated aluminum structural components, such as head blocks, sleeve blocks, bases, and corner blocks, used in the entertainment industry in portable structures. 

In South Africa, safety requirements for special event structures are described in chapter 14 of the SANS10366 National Standard for Safety in the Events Industry.


Entertainment Technology—Construction and Use of Wire Rope Ladders

This standard shall apply to the construction and use of wire rope ladders in the entertainment industry. The entertainment industry includes, but is not strictly limited to, musical productions, live concerts, live theater, film production, video production, corporate events, trade shows, and broadcast production. Wire rope ladders are distinguished from other ladders by having flexible rails, and are used in applications where ladders with rigid rails are impractical to use, or where a rigid ladder would pose a greater danger to the user or other workers in the area.


Entertainment Technology— Temporary Structures Used for Technical Production of Outdoor Entertainment Events

This document establishes a minimum level of design and performance parameters for the design, manufacturing, use and maintenance of temporary ground-supported structures used in the production of outdoor entertainment events. The purpose of this guidance is to ensure the structural reliability and safety of these structures and does not address fire safety and safe egress issues. The intent of this standard is to establish a reasonable standard for care by providing the minimum acceptable requirements at which temporary structures shall be designed and used. 


Entertainment Technology—Manual Counterweight Rigging Systems

ANSI E1.4-1 - 2022 is a revision of the previous 2016 version. It applies to permanently installed, manually operated counterweight systems of stage rigging hardware for the raising, lowering, and suspension of scenery, lighting, and similar loads. The standard has been updated to reflect current technology, and no longer includes or recommends wire-guided systems for new installations. 


Entertainment Technology – Statically Suspended Rigging Systems

ANSI E1.4-2 addresses statically suspended rigging systems permanently installed in performances spaces, places of assembly, and other areas used for entertainment purposes, where not covered by other ANSI Entertainment Technology standards. This standard establishes minimum performance criteria, recommendations and guidelines that can be used for installation, use, maintenance and inspection purposes. 

Entertainment Technology—Manually Operated Hoist Rigging Systems

This standard is the third in a set of revisions and partitions of ANSI E1.4-2014. It applies to permanently installed, manually operated hoists used as part of rigging systems for raising, lowering, and suspension of scenery, properties, lighting, and similar loads. This standard establishes requirements for the design, manufacture, installation, inspection, and maintenance of manually operated hoist systems for lifting and suspension of loads for performance, presentation, and theatrical production. 


Entertainment Technology – Powered Hoist Systems

This standard, a limited revision of the previous version, establishes requirements for the design, manufacture, installation, inspection, and maintenance of powered hoist systems for lifting and suspension of loads for performance, presentation, and theatrical production. It does not apply to the structure to which the hoist is attached, to attachment of loads to the load carrying device, or to systems for flying people. Excluded are welded link chain hoists, and manually powered hoists, including auxiliary drill operation. 


Design, Inspection, and Maintenance of Electric Chain Hoists for the Entertainment Industry

ANSI E1.6-2 - 2020 is part of the E1.6 powered entertainment rigging suite of standards. It covers the design, inspection, and maintenance of serially manufactured electric link chain hoists used in the entertainment industry. This standard does not cover attachment to the load or to the overhead structure. Controls used for multiple hoist operation are excluded from the scope of this part of the standard.

Selection and Use of Serially Manufactured Chain Hoists in the Entertainment Industry

This standard is intended to reduce injury and provide for the protection of life, limb and property. This standard does not address the design or maintenance of these hoists. 

Design, Inspection and Maintenance of Portable Fixed Speed Electric Chain Hoist Control Systems in the Entertainment Industry

This standard is a revision of ANSI E1.6-4-2013, splitting its scope into two different scopes for ease of future use and applicability. It establishes the minimum requirements for the design, inspection, and maintenance of Portable Fixed-Speed Electric Chain Hoist Control Systems in the Entertainment Industry. Other elements connected to Portable Chain Hoist Controllers such as the chain hoist, the electrical power system, the rigging, and the rigged load may be covered by other standards or codes of practice, and may also be required to be inspected by, or reviewed by, a local authority having jurisdiction. This standard is focused on control systems that are based on discrete signals that have a direct effect on the controlling relays, contactors, and indicators, without the aid of a Programmable Electronic System (PES). It is a companion document to ANSI E1.6-5 - 2022

This standard provides minimum requirements and general guidelines to assist an event organizer or producer regarding the suspension of equipment and materials that are used in the technical production of organized events. It addresses the general requirements for design, planning, installation, set-up, removal, and operation of rigging activities. These activities may be conducted either indoors or outdoors, on structures either temporary or permanent in nature. It does not address permanent rigging systems, nor rigging of people, of performer flying systems, or of the methods and construction of flying scenic elements.

This standard is an update of the 2018 version, correcting errata, and expanding on existing requirements. It covers any temporary structure used for special events ("temporary special event structures"), where such structures are used for presentation, performance, structural support of entertainment technology equipment, audience seating or viewing in conjunction with the event, and regardless if the event is indoor or outdoor. The scope of this standard covers any such structure not otherwise addressed by existing standards, codes or legislation, and to the extent that such other standards, codes or legislation do not already address conditional use of those temporary structures within existing structures.


Guidance for the Management and Use of Stages

This industry code of practice has been written for stages and similar stuctures, and their use at events although much of what has been written can equally be applied to other "temporary demountable structures." The guidelines were developed in consultation between the UK events industry and the enforcement agencies responsible for ensuring compliance.


The Australian Building Codes Standard for Temporary Structures

The ABCB has developed this Standard to enable State or Territory authorities responsible for regulatory matters associated with temporary structures to use it as the primary document of reference for temporary structures to be applied nationally.

This Standard is intended for use in the design, construction and use of temporary structures. It provides criteria for structural safety (particularly determining appropriate wind actions), fire safety (including fire resistance of materials, fire safety services and equipment, and egress), access, sanitary facilities and certain ancillary provisions.

Temporary structures are widely used for a variety of functions at public and private events. This guide, published by the Institute of Structural Engineers in the UK, draws on experiences from the London Olympics 2023 where temporary structures were used on an unprecedented scale


International Code of Practice for Entertainment Rigging v2

In response to calls from the international entertainment rigging community, rigging professionals from around the globe have voluntarily collaborated to create this International Code of Practice for Entertainment Rigging (ICOPER). Recognition and acceptance of this universal code will help promote regulatory harmony and reduce potential conflicts between regions around the world. The resulting improvements in communications and relations with regional and local regulators will be particularly beneficial to those professionals involved in international production. Acknowledging that regulations and standards differ around the world, ICOPER is not prescriptive, rather it provides a series of guidelines that, if followed, will produce uniformly predictable results and enhance safe practice. Adopting and supporting ICOPER therefore benefits everyone involved in event production.
