Promoting professional standards and ethical business practice in the communications industry throughout Southern Africa.

A Tribute to Nic Bonthuys, Chair of SACIA's Broadcast Industry Group

It is with profound sadness that the Southern African Communications Industries Association (SACIA) remembers Nic Bonthuys, Chair of our Broadcast Industry Group and a respected figure in South Africa's broadcasting industry, who passed away on 11 September 2016.

Nic dedicated four decades of his professional life to the South African Broadcasting Corporation (SABC), joining the organisation as a learner technician in 1974 and retiring in 2015 as General Manager of Outside Broadcasting. Over the course of his distinguished career, he witnessed and contributed to an era of extraordinary technological change in the broadcasting industry, from traditional analogue production to the increasingly sophisticated digital technologies that transformed television production.

NICOLAAS JOHANNES BONTHUYS
BORN: 15 JANUARY 1955
DIED: 11 SEPTEMBER 2016

Beyond his career at the SABC, Nic was deeply committed to advancing professional standards and recognising technical competence within the broadcast and communications technology sector.

As Chair of SACIA's Broadcast Industry Group, he played an instrumental role in the development of SACIA's Certified BCT professional designations, establishing a framework through which individuals working in broadcast and communications technology could have their knowledge, skills and professional competence formally recognised.

His contribution to this initiative reflected his belief in the importance of professional development, technical excellence and creating opportunities for industry practitioners to receive recognition for their expertise and experience. Nic understood that the strength of the broadcasting industry rested not only on its investment in technology, but also on the competence, dedication and professionalism of the people responsible for making that technology work.

His contribution to SACIA's professional designation framework remains an important part of his legacy, helping to establish a foundation for the recognition and continued development of broadcast and communications technology professionals in South Africa.

On behalf of the SACIA Board, the Broadcast Industry Group Council and our wider membership, we pay tribute to Nic's outstanding contribution to the broadcasting industry and to the professionalisation of our sector.

We extend our heartfelt condolences to his family, friends, former colleagues and the many industry professionals whose careers intersected with his own.

Nic Bonthuys will be remembered for his decades of service to South African broadcasting, his commitment to professional excellence and his contribution to building a stronger, more professional industry.

Rest in peace, Nic. Your contribution to our industry will not be forgotten.
